WHAT IS SELF CARE?

Self care is an important part of your physical and mental health. It’s about focusing on what you can control by acknowledging your needs and taking time to meet them. It requires checking in on yourself and looking forward to ways to do better.

WHAT SELF CARE ISN’T

It’s not selfish, a trend or hashtag on social media. It’s not a to do list either because to do lists cause stress which is against the point.

WHY SELF CARE IS NECESSARY

It makes you happier- By adopting healthy habits, you release happy hormones (endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin) which improve your mood and increase your happiness. This sets a positive tone for the day ahead.

It takes you to higher levels- The better you’re able to take care of yourself, the better equipped you’ll be to enjoy your life, reach your goals and take care of others.

It makes you check in on what’s important to you- It encourages you to stop, think and breathe about how you can make the day work for you and which of your needs are most important.

THE 5 KEY TYPES OF SELF CARE

Physical - It's about finding exertion and exercise you enjoy, as well as good nutrition. Examples of exercises are yoga, hiking, strength training, or a combination of exercises. For good nutrition, try eating more fruits and vegetables, cutting sugar and drinking plenty of water.

Emotional - Becoming more in-sync with your emotions and allowing yourself to feel them. Not about controlling your emotions. You let yourself feel all your emotions instead of ignoring or downplaying your emotions. Teaching yourself to respect (understand and control) your emotions empowers you to have greater compassion for yourself and others. It means being more mindful of the situations and thinking patterns that trigger negative emotions.

Social - It means spending time with loved ones, hanging out with friends, being part of your community and pursuing hobbies and interests with others that share your passion. People have different social levels - introvert and extrovert, so social self care looks different for people. The bottom line is to include happy people (happiness) in your life. Positive feelings are contagious.

Mental - The way you think and what you think about greatly impacts your well-being. It’s about keeping your mind sharp. Look for ways to make your brain grow and develop. It includes activities that stimulate your mind and intellect like reading, solving puzzles, playing chess, writing, studying or learning a new language. You should keep your mind constantly learning and growing.

Financial - Financial problems can be a significant form of stress and anxiety which affects your overall well-being.

There are 3 steps to this:

Increase your awareness of how you manage your money

Make a financial plan

Prioritize your expenses and stay on top of them
